Claude Certified Developer: Foundations

The exam for developers who write the code that calls Claude. It is about implementation, not architecture, and it leans on knowing the models and their settings.

Who it is for

Hands-on developers who build and ship applications with Claude. One to five years of software engineering, Python or TypeScript, and comfortable with REST APIs and command-line tools.

What it covers

Applications and integration is a third of the exam on its own. A published review by someone who passed it names these recurring themes:

  • Knowing the models. Which model fits a use case: a fast reply, a low token cost, or hard reasoning.
  • Model settings. What fast mode, the effort levels and adaptive thinking change.
  • Which API to call. The real-time API or the Message Batches API, when streaming helps, and how the SDK behaves.
  • Tool use and structured output, at less depth than CCAR-F.

How it compares with CCAR-F

The same review rates it a close second to CCAR-F in technical difficulty. It still asks for exact facts, mostly about model modes and settings. The difference is scope: what you have to memorise is narrower and easier to predict.

It also says much of this exam is covered, at a higher level, by CCAR-F. That is the reason to take CCAR-F first.
